Fundraising Tips

Thank you for signing up to Hike for Hospice! Hike for Hospice raises critical funds for patients and families in need of end-of-life care, and your fundraising efforts make all the difference.

Here are some easy tips to get you started:

1. Personalize Your Fundraising Page

Once registered, you will automatically have access to a personal fundraising page. Upload a photo and share your story! Your friends and family will be interested to know why you are participating in Hike for Hospice and it will inspire them to donate or join you.

Be sure to set a goal, as people tend to donate a little bit more in order to help you reach it.

To get started, simply log in to your participant center here or log in at the top right hand corner of the screen with you username and password. Then click on "participant center".

2. Make a Self Donation

Donating to your own fundraising goal shows your commitment to the cause and sets a great example for others.  You will also receive a tax- receipt and a special electronic reward on your fundraising page!

3. Reach Out to Your Networks

Your participant center makes it easy for you to email all your contacts! You can add your contacts to an address book, track emails sent, and access a template email to get you started. Be sure to customize the wording with your personal story.

Your friends and family are a good place to start, but don’t forget about your colleagues or other groups you belong to. Put up a poster at work and let people know you are accepting donations!

Remember, people can only make a donation if you give them the opportunity! Don’t be afraid to ask – you might be surprised who gives and how many people will share their hospice story with you.

Bonus tip – Don’t be afraid to remind people. You will find that many people you asked were meaning to donate but simply forgot. A follow up email is a great opportunity to update them on your progress and give those who have not donated a friendly reminder.

4. Be a Social Fundraiser

People lead busy lives and social media is a great way to connect with them. Try requesting a specific donation amount in your email, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram post and link directly to your fundraising page. Example: Will you donate $25 to help me reach my goal of raising $500 for patients and families in need of end-of-life care?

5. Get Creative

There are lots of fun ways to fundraise so be creative and do what you love.

  • Ask your fitness or yoga teacher to host a charity class by donation
  • Host a dinner party and ask friends to bring a donation, instead of a bottle of wine
  • Ask your employer if you can run a “Casual Friday” at work where people can dress down or wear jeans in exchange for a donation to your Hike for Hospice.
  • Have a garage sale or sell an item on Used.ca!
  • Host a bake sale, BBQ, or silent auction
  • Ask if your company has a matching gift program. You might be able to double your pledges!

Remember to add what you raise to your total online! Pledges of cash or cheque can be entered through your participant center by clicking on "Enter new gift".

Most importantly, don’t forget to THANK the people who support you. You will find a sample thank you template in your participant center to help get you started.
